Branchburg

Branchburg is located in Somerset County, and includes the communities of North Branch and Neshanic Station. The north side borders Bedminister and the south side borders Bridgewater and Hillsborough Township. Branchburg covers an area of approximately 20 square miles, about eleven miles long and about 2 miles across. Branchburg's main bodies of water are the Lamington River located on the North, the North Branch of the Raritan River on the east and the South branch of the Raritan River on the east and south.

What is now known as Branchburg Township was originally inhabited by the Raritan Indians, which was a tribe of the Lenni-Lenape Indians. In 1686 most of the land was then purchased from the Indians by the Lords Proprietors of Eastern New Jersey. They had sold the land in small parcels to many settlers, most of Dutch or English descent. Branchburg was then located in a large area called East Jersey, but encompassed parts of Middlesex, Essex and Somerset counties. In 1741 Somerset County acquired parts of Middlesex and Essex county, nearly doubling its size. Because of the expansion of Somerset County, Branchburg now lays entirely within the County where it is presently located. Branchburg is a semi-rural area, with a touch of flavor in North Branch and Neshanic Station. It is also known as a college town, the home of the Raritan Valley Community College with a 250 acre campus and nearly 5,000 full and part-time students.

State highways are Route 202 and 22 which run through the town, as well as Route 28 in North Branch. There is a Municipal Park-and-Ride facility on Highway 202 North, and bus service between Branchburg and New York City, which makes it a wonderful source of commuting on a daily basis for residents. Newark International Airport is 35 miles northeast, with Allentown Bethlehem-Easton Airport in Pennsylvania and Laguardia and Kennedy airports in New York within easy driving distance.

Branchburg offers a great Recreation Department, named "OUR WORK IS YOUR PLAY!!!", giving residents the opportunity to participate in a number of programs, trips and events at their leisure. The Branchburg Recreation Department is "Going Green" - what a great place to start a family.

Branchburg School System:
Whiton Elementary School is for grades and K-2, both Old York School and Stony Brook School for grades 3-5 and Branchburg Central Middle School for grades 6-8. The public secondary school serving Branchburg for grades 9-12 is Somerville High School, which students attend as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Somerville Public Schools.

Midland School is a non-profit special education school serving the individual social, emotional, academic and career needs of children with developmental disabilities. The school serves about 245 students, ranging in age from 5 to 21 years old, from central and northern New Jersey.
